I get asked a lot how I got into giant pumpkin growing and I’ve told the story many a time. And I thought I would write about it here. I’d also love to hear about how you got into it. Please leave a comment below.
How it all started
Well, way back in the day (actually only 5 years ago) my sister who was working in a garden centre gave me a giant pumpkin plant to grow, more for the novelty factor more then anything as I didn’t really have green fingers.
It grew and grew and started getting to a decent size, but we decided to move house and unsure of what to do with it, I cut it from the vine and left it there for the new tenant to discover. Here it is with my daughter on it.
The website was born
At the same time I decided to put together a website with what I was doing, the same website you are looking at right now, it was a lot different back then.
The following year I forgot all about getting pumpkin seeds, went to the Warehouse brought a packet from them and grew this pumpkin in a very small patch, just proving you don’t need the biggest piece of land to grow giant pumpkins.
It was also the first year I took a pumpkin to a competition which was the first year for The Great Pumpkin Carnival, after coming 2nd that year with this pumpkin:
I have helped organise parts of it for the last two years.
So there we have it, how I got started in giant pumpkin growing. I’d love to hear how you got started in it, leave a comment below.
