Giant Pumpkins NZ - Pruning the vines

Pruning vines is something that should be done to help maximise the nutrients the pumpkin will get and to help minimise the stress on the vine as the pumpkin grows.

Pruning early on in the growth cycle of the giant pumpkin will help stop random vines going everywhere and taking over your garden.

When the vines get to 3-4m from the pumpkin, it is to prune it.  Training the vines when the pumpkin is small to go away from where the pumpkin will grow will help reduce the risk of the splitting of the vine, which may reduce the nutrients the pumpkin will get, or worse case scenario it snaps completely off the vine.
