Pumpkin update, lost my Mojo?

Hi guys

Thanks for checking out the website, no video this time as when I went around to check on the pumpkins, not a lot was happening.  Apart from weeds, everywhere.

I have about 3 -4 pumpkins growing at the moment, but they are very small.  This could be due to a lot of different stuff, but the weeds are surely not helping the matter.

Losing the pumpkin mojo
I think with moving house and travelling a lot over this recent period I have lost part of my pumpkin Mojo.  Just imagine that you have moved away from your pumpkin patch, and you have to travel every time to check up on it, you don’t have the convenience of just going outside and there it is.

But you know what, that is OK, everyone has off years, either the plants themselves aren’t doing too well, or something else crops up that is more important, life does get in the way sometimes.

I’ll still have something to show
I am sure the pumpkins will grow, probably not into the best that they could be, but definitely into something, and I am looking forward to the pumpkin rolling at the Hamilton Gardens when our competition is.  I am also involved with helping organise it, so that is keeping me busy.

Next time I promise a video and some photos, I just wanted to let you know what I was up to, and where I was.

How is everyone else going this year?

Not too good my way. Cold winds burnt many leaves. In fact I’m blaming the variable weather for the collapse of the first fruit. But have 2 or 3 set and looking strong. Not a good year in Wellington all round. My tons are hating it too.

Hi Sam, I have just really enjoyed looking at the site and also watching your videos. It is my first time ever growing an Atlantic Giant pumpkin and I must say I feel this obsession is getting crazy and I might be addicted. I have got a pumpkin about the size of a volley ball so I am pretty stoked – I am aiming for the RD1 competion – I am from Feilding and I will be taking it there on 17th March so I am hoping this pumpkin gets it a into g. Anyways, good site and do keep updating – its good to see what is happening with your pumpkins. I am especially wondering what I should do with mu wine and where on earth I should prune it as I have done none of this.

This is no good Sam pumpkins take a lot of work. Has your tv watching suffered, thats when I do most of my work in the evenings when I’d only be veged in front of the tv. I also get up early before work to spray. Anyhow theres always next year bro. My kins are doing ok growing faster than last year so thats good. Theres still a long way to go bro. Now get weeding!

Yeah they sure do, I hardly watch TV so I’m good with that, it’s just been really busy this year with heaps of other things. And yeah, there is always next year, I have learnt a lot this time.

Hi Sam, don’t know what is happening this year but up in Kumeu the pumpkins are not big. This time last year we were at 100kg plus. 9 of us this year growing for the Kumeu Show in 40 days time . Like you lots of weed , plant and leaf but small fruit. Getting worried. Cheers Stephen

Hi Stephen, I think this year might be an off year for most growers, but we will have to see if there are any surprises, we are lucky here as our main competition is bit later then last years one, I am hoping this helps.
