Christmas Eve Update

Hiya

I thought I would get this update in before Christmas and before I head off around the different places catching up with people.

It has been a strange old end to the year, but I am looking forward to next year, with more stuff happening on all fronts, I am sure it will be a busy one.

Weeds, weeds, weeds
You don’t check on the patch for a little while, and it soon becomes hard to spot the pumpkins for the weeds, well for me it wasn’t too hard, but it sure was crazy seeing the growth of the … Read the rest

Labour weekend update

Hello there, no videos or photos in this post.

But I thought I had better update, I’ve been a bit under the weather the last couple of weeks, and with recovering from the All Blacks win last night, doesn’t bode well for feature packed updates.

Now onto the pumpkins, this weekend was the time to get them into the ground, more or less.  Be wary of any random cold snaps we may still have, and be prepared to offer some protection to your little seedlings.  Even something as simple as a cardboard box over the top overnight can help, just … Read the rest

Competition is Around the Corner

Hi giant pumpkins growers, how are you all? No video for this post, so you will have to put up with my writing.

I think most of the country has been very wet this weekend.  I know it sure has here, and with only 2 weeks until the competition I am a little nervous.

Growing the wrong way
I’m not sure if I have mentioned it before, but I am sure the keen growers out there would have noticed it, my big pumpkin is actually growing the wrong way, the blossom end is up the top, and the stem end … Read the rest

New Pumpkin Forum is up and Running

The new giantpumpkins.co.nz forum is up and running, here is a short video of me talking about it.

The main reason for it are:

  • Easier way to share information between growers
  • Easier for growers to get to know each other
  • A new way to have the information displayed for everyone

You don’t need to register to read the forum, but you need to be registered to reply or start a new conversation.  The link is up the top in the menu.

My Pumpkin Helper

Every year I have a little helper who helps me with my giant pumpkins, from digging the ground to watering the pumpkins, she loves watching the pumpkins grow.

You know the pumpkins are doing OK when she can sit on them, every year I am going to have to grow a bigger and bigger pumpkin so she can still sit on them.

As well as helping with my pumpkins, she is also growing her own miniature ones, which have been great to see grow, here is a pic of a mature miniature pumpkin.

They are a really good thing to … Read the rest
